• Hudson Cup wrap up.

Northern Rangers Premier League side took on Launceston, a team that could only manage a 4 all draw with our Reserves last week, but the tournament hosts were a much improved side this week.

  • Rangers Win a Poor Contest

Northern Rangers travelled to Hobart for what should be the last game of the Southern Summer Cup, a win was expected, but no one expected it to be this hard. Nelson is a Southern Premier League side, and realistically should not trouble a Victory League outfit starting to get all their players back, but that’s what happened.

  • Mixed bag for full weekend of Ranger matches

Photo Courtesy Walter PlessNorthern Rangers had three competitive fixtures across the Southern Summer Cup and Hudson Cup this weekend, and weddings, injury, player restrictions and coaching courses meant a great number of players were unavailable to line up in the early stage of the year.

Some have criticised the club for not taking the Summer Cup seriously, but the strength of the squad was the best we could muster on this weekend, given there are 2 players overseas, 3 players attending weddings, 3 other Victory League players either working or injured and 2 players on coaching courses this particular Saturday.

  • Tim Lunnon appointed Head Coach

From L to R: Dane Hudson, Tim Lunnon and Brendan Lichtendonk. The Northern Rangers Football Club wishes to advise the public that our caretaker coach Brendan Lichtendonk has decided to step down from that role as of 12th February 2014.

The Club's board, acting on Brendan's recommendation, have appointed Tim Lunnon as Head Coach and Dane Hudson as his assistant. This was confirmed on Monday after the first Summer Cup match under Tim’s control against Clarence.

Brendan, a lifelong servant and respected member of the club is quoted as saying:

"I took this job on, only until a more qualified person could be found to fill the role. This appointment allows me to continue my coaching courses and devote more time helping with the administration of the club.

Since Tim Lunnon made contact with the club, I felt he would be the ideal person to take over the role as our Victory League Coach. He has worked with me now for the last 3 weeks and with Dane Hudson also coming on board, I know the best people to take us forward in 2014 are Tim Lunnon and Dane Hudson.

For this reason I am most happy to step aside as care taker coach, and I look forward to looking after our Premier League in 2014.

The Northern Premier League side was the most disappointing part of the season last year, the Premier League boys were disengaged, underperformed and lacked the spirit for the club, I am excited about bringing that back in 2014, and playing a part in our future through the development of some exciting talent."

Northern Rangers also today signed Mike McKenna as the club's second keeper to support the Victory League campaign. It is hoped that McKenna can be registered in time to take to the field in this Saturday's Southern Summer Cup game with Beachside.

  • Wani and Fisher kick off Summer Cup with braces

John Wani in Action during 2013, scored a good double including a delicate finish over the keeper.Northern Rangers opened their summer cup campaign against Clarence United on Saturday in hot conditions, magnified by the artificial surface.

Gabriel Tams was announced captain for the Cup campaign after a great showing during the pre season, setting the standard for commitment and effort to date.

There are always plenty of players missing this time of year, for one reason or another, Todd Hingston, Marshall Pooley, Ayden Demeijer, Shane Brassington and Pat Lanau-Atkinson were among those missing and expected to feature in the starting line up.

The match was an unattractive affair in the opening half an hour, with some new faces struggling to adopt the plan, but as the game wore on, things improved.

Ash Fisher and John Wani managed to open the scoring for Rangers and kept the 2-0 score line to half time. Discussions around keeping the clean sheet and ensuring no easy goals went through fell on deaf ears as Rangers conceded a sloppy goal to let Clarence back in the game, but moved swiftly to restore the lead and push on.

The fitness of the group seemed the major difference, with Rangers running out 7-2 winners, doubles to John Wani and Ash Fisher, with contributions on the score sheet to Aidan Rigby, Nick Lanau-Atkinson and Gabriel Tams.

A solid start, but all the work to do next week with a tough game against Beachside, who defeated Nelson 5-0 on Sunday.

  • FFT introduces eight new Football Participation Officers

Participation priority as FFT introduces eight fresh faces Football Federation Tasmania (FFT) have this week employed eight new Football Participation Officers (FPOs) to work across Tasmania in developing junior footballers and driving participation for the world game.

The hiring of eight new FPOs is part of a major restructure of the football development department, with FFT spreading resources across the state to reach all major participation areas and engage with juniors.

The role of the FPOs will be to predominately provide Tasmanian school children with a football experience at school and introducing them to the prospect of joining one of our member clubs or associations.

Of the eight FPOs, there are four positioned in the south of the state with two in the north and two in the northwest, with two of the southern FPOs current Victory League players.

    The successful applicants were;

    Matt Lewis – Southern Hobart/Kingston
    Jayden Hey – Central Hobart
    Danielle Nossiter – Northern Hobart
    Ben Horgan – Eastern Shore
    Taylor Neilson – Southern Launceston
    Tim Lunnon – Northern Launceston
    John Alexiou – Ulverstone/Devonport
    Darren Purton – Somerset/Burnie/West Coast
